With summer right around the corner, many people are now planning their summer activities and vacations.  After all, summer is a time to create lifelong memories.  When eligible donors give blood with the American Red Cross, they can also give others time to make their own memories - watching fireworks, having a picnic, sleeping under the stars, taking a dip or rooting for the home team.

Blood donations often decline during the summer, when schools are out and vacations are in.  The Red Cross encourages donors to make an appointment to give now to help ensure a stable supply in the weeks and months ahead, giving patients a chance to create a summer of stories.

Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of fine $1000 American Express gift cards to create their own summer of stories.  In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care.  The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities in Cass County:

May 20 from 1:30-6:30pm at the Fire Hall, 601 N Fourth, Elmwood

May 20 from 11:30am-5:30pm, VFW Post 2543, Plattsmouth

The 2013 Monumental Fiddling Championships will be held at the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice, Nebraska on Saturday, May 25.  Registration opens at 10am, and the contests start at noon.

The Junior Division is for folks who have fiddled less than 5 years.  Each fiddler will play 2 tunes.

The Senior Division is for folks who have fiddled 5 years or more.  Each fiddler will play 3 tunes...a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice.

The Legends Division is for folks who have won first place in the Senior Division in previous years.  Each fiddler will play 3 tunes...a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice.

-a Hoedown (upbeat danceable tune in two or four),

-a Waltz (danceable tune in three)

-a Tune of choice (other than a hoedown or waltz, such as jigs, polkas, rags, blues, etc)

All contest tunes must have been in existence when the Homestead National Monument was established in 1936.

Contestants may play with one or two backup acoustic musicians, neither to be playing melody.  A backup guitartist is available for fiddlers who need one.

Contestants will be judged on pitch, tone, rhythm, and presentation (showmanship, interpretation, flair, creativity, charisma, adherence to the rules, etc).

Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in the Junior, Senior, and Legends Divisions.

First place winners in the Junior and Senior Divisions will be able to choose either the prize money or a new fiddle.
