February is Black History Month, and in the spirit of Dr. Charles Drew, a black surgeon and blood specialist who became the first medical director of an American Red Cross blood bank in 1941, the Red Cross reminds all eligible donors how important it is that donors are as diverse as the patients who need their help. Drew's pioneering work in blood collection and transfusion laid the foundation for modern blood banks.
All patients are matched by blood type and Rh factor prior to transfusion. For some patients, additional red cell markers in donated blood also have been matched. These markers are determined by ethnicity and are best found in a diverse donor base.

Pat Schliefert hands over the keys of the Louisville Senior Center to the new Manager, Evelyn Hans. Pat has announced her retirement this month after 15 years at the Senior Center. Evelyn comes to the position with a degree in nursing home administration and 15 years of previous experience working as an activities director in long term care. Her first priority is to increase awareness of what the Louisville Senior Center has to offer and increase attendance. The center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-2pm and meals are delivered by ENOA (Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging) for a minimal fee. Also, there is the availability to have in-home delivery of these meals. anyone interested in eating in or dining at home must call one day in advance to make arrangements. The Center is located at 423 Elm and the telephone number if 402-234-2120. It's a fun place for seniors to play cards or bingo or do crafts. Evelyn is also lining up entertainment as well as guest speakers. Events will be posted in local venues. But for now, pot luck lunches will return on the first Monday of the month from 12:00-1:00 - they are free if you bring a covered dish or the cost is $4. And the biscuits and gravy breakfast will continue on the last Saturday of each month. Everyone - of any age - is invited to partake in these two special meal events. The next covered dish/potluck lunch will be Monday March 4th with corned beef and cabbage as the main dish.
